14:1Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath day, that they watched Him.And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.
14:2And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy.And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.
14:3And Jesus, responding, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath day?"And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?
14:4But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go.And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;
14:5Then He responded to them, saying, "Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?"And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?
14:6And they could not answer Him regarding these things.And they could not answer him again to these things.
14:7So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them:And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,
14:8"When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him;"When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;
14:9and he who invited you and him come and say to you, 'Give place to this man,' and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place."And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
14:10But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, 'Friend, go up higher.' Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you."But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
14:11Because, whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
14:12Then He also said to him who invited Him, "When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brethren, your relatives, nor your rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid."Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
14:13But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind."But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
14:14And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; because, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just."And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
14:15Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him, "Blessed is he who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!"And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
14:16Then He said to him, "A certain man made a large supper and invited many,"Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
14:17and sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, 'Come, because all things are now ready.'"And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
14:18But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.'"And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
14:19And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.'"And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
14:20Still another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.'"And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
14:21So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.'"So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
14:22And the servant said, 'Master, it is done as you have commanded, and still there is room.'"And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
14:23Then the master said to the servant, 'Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled."And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
14:24Because, I say to you that none of those men who were invited will taste my supper.'"For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.
14:25Now large crowds went with Him. And He turned and said to them,And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,
14:26"If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple."If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
14:27And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple."And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
14:28Because, which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it?"For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
14:29Lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all who see it begin to mock him,"Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
14:30saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.'"Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
14:31Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?"Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
14:32Or else, while the other is still a long way off, he sends a delegation and desires conditions of peace."Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
14:33So likewise, whoever it is of you who does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple."So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
14:34"Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how will it be seasoned?"Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
14:35It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!"It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
